Ellen Altfest paints from life, carefully composing her subjects through extended observation, often spending months or even years to complete a single framed view. How does she capture what is not only still but alive within the canvas borders? Join us for a brief presentation of her work and a screening of Ellen in Rising Fawn (First Cut), a short film by her husband, Rob Colvin. Following the presentation and screening, Altfest and Colvin will discuss the role of observation and representation in her creative process, and how both unfold over time.
Ellen Altfest lives and works in New York and Rising Fawn, Georgia. She received an MFA from Yale University, New York (1997), and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine (2002). She has completed residencies at SAGA House, Kyoto, Japan (2022); the Zabludowicz Collection, Finland (2016); Bogliasco Foundation, Bogliasco, Italy (2014); and Chinati Foundation, Marfa (2010). Solo exhibitions of her work have taken place at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2022) and New Museum, New York (2012). She has also participated in group exhibitions at Royal Academy of Arts, London (2017); 55th Venice Biennale (2013); Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Texas (2012); and The National Academy Museum, New York (2006). Altfest is represented by White Cube, where she has had several exhibitions.
