Taken from the Artist Statement:
“The 52 photos in the Take My Picture exhibition (Wrightwood 659, Chicago, April 14 to July 15, 2023) and in this catalogue are a small sample of the thousands of photos taken by me in the 1980s but are — as I see in retrospect — an introductory documentation of the sociocultural phenomena affecting same-gender-loving Black men. I inadvertently photo-captured a demi-world of Black men in Chicago—pre-labels, pre-AIDS, and pre-crack. If I had been more intentional in documenting that world, I would have taken many more images of people, venues, and places on my daily journeys on my bicycle through the streets and parks of Chicago. The selection of images in this exhibition, however, does raise a question: Why did young Black men in the 1980s ask a cyclist with a camera to take their pictures?”
