Buffalo Arts and Crafts: Industry vs. Artisan

Watch Now

Join us Thursday February 17th for a lecture by Jonathan Katz, Curator of Reimagining the Larkin (part of the Romanticism to Ruin exhibition) and Associate Professor at University of Pennsylvania. The virtual program Buffalo Arts and Crafts: Industry vs. Artisan, explores the impact of the Larkin Soap Company and Elbert Hubbard, its pioneering salesman and eventual founder of the Roycroft artisan community, on the aesthetics and principles of an American handmade movement. In his lecture, Katz considers how and why Buffalo became an epicenter of the Arts & Crafts industry which unapologetically deploy industrial machinery in factory settings, while still celebrating the handcraft tradition.
